Super Bowl commercial likes/dislikes

This year's Super Bowl received a record number of viewers. Whether they tuned in to watch the game or the commercials is up in the air. I however watched for both. This year’s commercials both impressed and disappointed me. Several invoked great laughter while others left me wondering why or what's that about.

In one ad for Doritos, a man walks around eating Doritos and with each chip he eats something good happens. The first chip he eats causes the clothes to fly off a good looking woman walking past him, leaving only her lingerie. Another chip causes money to fly from an ATM onto the street. Next when a cop arrives to take care of the ATM he eats another chip and turns the cop into a monkey. The luck is about to run out, however, because when he tries to eat another chip his bag is empty and he gets hit by a bus. Doritos advertised the commercial with a statement, "The power of the crunch."

Doritos also provided another good ad where two men in an office building used a snow globe as a "crystal ball". The taller man asks the snow globe about free Doritos at the office today and then throws the globe through the snack machine window. Then another coworker proceeds to take the Doritos from the machine in the background as the taller man says, "I think that's a yes!” Next the shorter man is shaking the snow globe and asks it, "Will I finally get that big promotion?” He then throws the snow globe through the door as the boss walks through and it hits him in the privates. The taller man steps in and says, "Promotion? Not in your future."

Pepsi Max then had the "I'm Good!" commercial, which depicts several men performing random tasks and always getting hurt doing them. After each accident the man that gets hurt always states, "I'm Good!". The announcer then steps in and says, "Men can take anything except the taste of diet cola, until now. Pepsi Max the first diet cola for men." Another of my favorite ads was from CareerBuilder.com. The announcer in the commercial repeats the same several phrases over and over to emphasize it might be time to get a new job. He mentions, "If you hate going to work every day", "your coworkers don't respect you", "you always wish you were somewhere else", "you cry constantly", "you daydream of punching small animals", "you sit next to this guy (shows a man picking his toenails in a Speedo and laughing in an annoying manor)", and "if you make loads of money, it's probably not time". During each statement it shows a funny clip to go along with that statement. Also following each series of statements he says, "It’s probably time (to look at CareerBuilder.com for a new job)".

Finally my favorite ad of all, the Miller High Life one second ad. In this ad there is a man dressed as a beer salesman or delivery man in a warehouse full of Miller High Life. The man then throws his hands in the air and says, "High Life!"

For every good commercial during the Super Bowl there always exists and equally bad commercial here are a few of my least favorite ads.

General Electric used a scarecrow in an electric tower singing "If I Only Had A Brain." An announcer then says, "Smart grid technology by GE will make the way we distribute electricity more efficient simply by making it more intelligent."

Another of my least favorite ads included the Pepsi "MacGruber" ad. It depicts a man with long hair trying to imitate MacGyver. The man tries to diffuse a bomb on a ship and he states he changed his name to "Pepsuber", while trying to diffuse the bomb he says to "relax" as he drinks a Pepsi and the boat ends up exploding.

GoDaddy.com also unveiled a few commercials that I didn't like. The first was three young men in a college dorm room on a computer. The one man states that he can make anything happen on his new website from GoDaddy.com. The computer screen then shows Danica Patrick getting into the shower. She says, "This is my fifth shower today." Then the young men add a German woman from their dean's office into the shower scene.

In another GoDaddy.com commercial, the ad takes place in a court room with the judge asking several big busted women if they have "enhanced." Danica Patrick says she has enhanced her image using GoDaddy.com. Then another woman states, "Enhanced?, I'll show you enhanced(as she pulls her top down)."

My last least favorite commercial came from Coca-Cola. It showed a city scene with people on the street turning into avatars. The commercial follows one man walking through the streets and he sits down next to a big, green, mean looking avatar. Then a waitress sets a Coke beside him and they both grab it. When the avatar grabs the Coke he turns into an attractive young lady, then the waitress sets another coke down for the young man and they begin to talk.

These ads all try to appeal to viewers using several different methods. My favorite ads use comedy to grab attention, while my least favorite ads may also use comedy but they are dry and appeal only to a few people. I didn't understand the avatar commercial at all and the GoDaddy.com ads just aren't funny to me. My favorite ads however, all appeal to people of all ages and can make anyone laugh. I believe that the key to good advertisement lies in relating to people and every one of my favorite ads allows the viewer to somehow put them self in the ad. The only exception being the one second ad which was pure genius.
